Western Australia has taken another step towards a green energy future, with proposed laws to allow the transport and storage of greenhouse gas.
The carbon capture and storage amendment bill introduced to state parliament on Wednesday will also enable exploration for naturally occurring hydrogen.
Mines, Petroleum and Hydrogen Industries Minister Bill Johnston says the bill is a response to climate change that will provide legislative certainty to greenhouse gas storage projects and encourage industry development.
"The Cook government is aware industry is interested in exploring for naturally occurring hydrogen as an alternative source of energy, and we're committed to reducing emissions," he said.
"Together, this amendment will assist government and industry to progress towards the goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050."
Carbon capture and storage involves capturing and storing carbon dioxide to reduce emissions from industrial-scale processes and projects.
