A newly minted opposition leader has unveiled his shadow cabinet and confirmed that his party will work in alliance with the state National party.

Basil Zempilas replaced Libby Mettam as the head of the Western Australian Liberal party following its third successive election defeat at the recent poll.

The Perth media personality and former lord mayor talked up the alliance on Friday, saying the two parties were united in their commitment to work collaboratively.

"From the city to the regions, Western Australians deserve a strong opposition that is disciplined and rigorous and will demand integrity and transparency from the government," Mr Zempilas said.

Nationals leader Shane Love said the parties would bring a united front to the new parliament.

"Over the next four years you will see a determined opposition focussed on achieving better outcomes for all Western Australians," he said.

But it became even more strained during the last parliament when the Nationals became the official opposition after Labor won 53 of 59 seats in the 2021 election.

The drubbing left the Liberals with just two seats to the Nationals four.

The Liberals resumed the opposition title after the March 8 election when Labor won 46 seats to the Liberals' seven and the Nationals' six.

The new shadow cabinet posts are split between the Liberals and Nationals, with Ms Mettam appointed to the deputy opposition leader role and the health and defence portfolios, as well as manager of opposition business.

Mr Love picked up regional development, mines and petroleum and electoral affairs, while Mr Zempilas has the state development, trade and investment and citizenship and multicultural interests portfolios.
