An emergency bushfire warning for residents of the city of Albany at the southern tip of Western Australia to evacuate has been downgraded to a watch and act advice.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the fire started near the intersection of Churchlane Road in Kalgan on Sunday.
A bushfire watch and act was in place on Sunday night for people in an area bounded by Churchlane Road and Hunton Road to the east, Baker Junction Reserve and Mead Road to the west and Mount Boyle Road to the south in parts of Kalgan and Napier in Albany
The fire posed a possible threat to lives and homes as it approached the area and conditions were changing.
Firefighters were on the scene actively fighting the blaze and strengthening containment lines.
City of Albany personnel and 30 Bush Fire Service firefighters were also on the scene.
People who were not prepared or who planned to leave were advised to leave if the way was clear.
People who planned to actively defend their homes were urged to make final preparations.
The bushfire was moving slowly in a south-to-south easterly direction on Sunday night and was contained but not controlled.
People who were not at home were advised not to try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous
An evacuation centre set up at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre at Barker Road, Albany, has now been closed.
