He's quickly back up and running, however.

Jack Haig is now out front solo with several riders chasing.

Van Aert is now back in the peloton.
Isaac Del Toro among the attackers.
Tao Geoghegan Hart, Jack Haig, and Pavel Bittner are also part of the move.
More attacks go but the large front group is caught.

Race leader Ben O'Connor has a mechanical problem and briefly drops off the rear of the peloton but he's back in there now.

Over six minutes for the breakaway now.
Around 20km to go to the day's first climb, the first-category Mirador del Fito.

Van Aert sticks with Vine into the final 500 metres.
Both are on 46 points in the mountain classification.
Vine tries to sprint past Van Aert but the Belgian easily wins the sprint and goes clear to take first over the top of the Mirador del Fito.
Van Aert takes 10 points to bring his total to 56.
Six points for Vine in second takes him to 52.

Van Aert tackles the descent solo.

Van Aert is nearing the bottom of the descent and is still out front on his own.
Decathlon AGR2 La Mondiale lead the peloton over the top of the climb at 9:50 behind the break.
Van Aert takes on the uncategorised climb following the descent. He's 50 seconds up on the rest of the chase.

Van Aert continues to push on alone in the valley. He has under 20km to go to the base of the next climb.

The riders behind in the chase are bringing the gap down, however. It's now at 50 seconds.

Now Van Aert takes off at the front of the break to go solo once again.
Valentin Paret-Peintre leads the GC group on behalf of Ben O'Connor.

A crash in the breakaway as Engelhardt slides out at the front of the group on the descent. Van Aert and Del Toro have also gone down.
Van Aert is back up and running now after getting a fresh bike from his team car.
He's freewheeling down the descent, though.
Van Aert crashed into the hillside on his right-hand side and now he's pulled up once again. He's holding his knee and is being tended to by a medic as he sits in the boot of the team car.
It looks like race over for Van Aert.

Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe lined up at the front behind the four Decathlon AG2R men.

Poole and Zana remain at the front now.

Soler is making his way back across.
Five minutes back to the peloton.
Soler attacks again. Poole goes with him as Zana drops.

Landa goes on the move from the peloton.
Paret-Peintre takes to the front of the peloton to lead the chase behind.
Poole and Soler still together at the front.
Landa has around 10 seconds on the GC group.

The leaders now on 14% gradients as Zana chases.
Mas now takes it up at the front.
Roglič, Carapaz, Kuss behind him.
Mas is leading the quartet across to Landa.
O'Connor dropped by that move.

Mas brings the group, which also includes Gaudu, across to Landa.
4:35 from the leaders to the Mas/Roglič group. 4:50 back to O'Connor.
Up front, Zana is up with Poole and Soler.
Poole pushes on at the front.
Mas attacks again.
Carapaz goes with him. Up front, Soler makes another move.

Soler is still on his own up front.
20 seconds from Soler to Poole and Zana.
Roglič, Mas, Carapaz and Gaudu are still together.

Soler is racing to the stage win now.
Gaudu is dropping away.

O'Connor remains 50 seconds off Roglič, Mas and Carapaz.
Gaudu a few seconds off the back.
He's trying to make it back in as the group heads into the final kilometre.

Mas leads the group to the line.
The trio finish the stage 3:54 down on Soler.
O'Connor crosses the line and the gap is just under a minute.
The Australian remains in red tonight.
He leads Roglič by just five seconds now.
