Morning, everyone. As the fallout from the row over politicians’s perks continues, our latest Guardian Essential poll shows a majority of voters are opposed to handouts for concerts and airline upgrades.

We’re also reporting on the family of an autistic boy cleared of terrorist offences detained in Singapore after a “red flag” was placed on his passport, it’s the final day of campaigning in the US election, and David Stratton reveals the classic Australian film he now accepts he was wrong about.

A small but influential number of medical practitioners who either actively obstruct abortion care or who are uninterested in providing it are leaving women unable to access abortion in many parts of rural NSW. These are the findings of a study of 16 healthcare providers, including GP registrars, GP obstetricians, nurses and midwives, revealing the existence of often underground networks of health workers providing access to abortion care to patients. Melissa Davey reports.

Not the news

David Stratton, the veteran film critic, has a new book made up of 650 reviews chronicling the history of Australian cinema from 1990 to 2020 – though it’s likely to be his last as he battles health problems and fading eyesight. Luke Buckmaster caught up with him to discuss why he now rates The Castle, why superhero movies leave him cold, and the one TV series that this avowed cineaste has been able to tolerate (he finds them all “padded”).

A team of researchers in Melbourne has helped solve the mystery of a killer skin disease, the Age reports. The once-grand Brisbane department store McWhirters Marketplace now resembles a “ghost town”, with people sleeping rough inside, the Courier-Mail reports. A death notice posted in the Sydney Morning Herald by two brothers for their “wild and wayward mother” and ending “Bring a shovel” has gone viral around the world.
