In 2021, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt wasn’t only the best defensive player on the team but also the best defensive player in the NFL. 2022 was very different as Watt missed seven games with a torn pectoral and other players stepped up in his absence.
Veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward continued to defy his age and had perhaps his best all-around season. 74 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, 22 quarterback hits and four passes defended at 33 years old.
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to his All-Pro form in 2022 as he led the NFL with six interceptions. Fitzpatrick was also selected Steelers MVP by his teammates and made the Pro Bowl.
Finally, we have outside linebacker Alex Highsmith who took over the role as the team’s primary edge rusher. Highsmith finished sixth in the NFL with 14.5 sacks and chipped in 63 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits and five forced fumbles.
