Volunteers are working egg-stra hard to deliver Easter treats

A team of volunteers are working egg-stra hard to put smiles on thousands of children’s faces this Easter.

Renfrewshire Toy Bank, which became a year-round operation last year, is making sure no child misses out on an Easter egg.

They’re currently fundraising and appealing for people to donate even just £1 to help them buy as many chocolate eggs as they can for children who may otherwise not receive one.

Founder Lauren Roy-Sutherland said they’d already distributed 3,000 chocolate eggs but are hoping to do much more.

She said: “This is our second Easter appeal. It gives us a good indication of what demand is going to be like at Christmas. We’re already bracing ourselves for Christmas to be a busy one this year and very much needed.

“Everything is going up in price, food, electricity, gas, and people’s wages aren’t.

“We contact every school in Renfrewshire as well as the nurseries and they know which children are living in poverty. One school I spoke to the other day has 80 per cent of children living in poverty.

“We’ve already given out 3,000 eggs so we’re on track. I’ve had another two organisations contact me this week. We want to make sure we cover all of Renfrewshire, not just the big towns.”

The appeal is asking people to donate cash rather than chocolate eggs as they are so fragile to collect.

As well as Easter eggs, the appeal buys smaller chocolates like Creme Eggs and Maltesers bunnies to give out.

They’re working hard to make sure schools receive their donations before they close for the Spring holidays on Friday, April 1. Other community groups will receive theirs closer to Easter.

Lauren added: “Our volunteers have been working really hard so far. As soon as the money is there, we’re out buying the Easter eggs to get them distributed.

“It’s a big job to contact all the schools and nurseries as well. A big thanks to our volunteers Kat, Lorna, Sheila and Trevor who have all worked really hard so far.”

Anyone who’d like to make a donation can send money via PayPal by going to https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/renfrewshirectb or via a bank transfer to the account called The Renfrewshire Christmas Toy Bank, account number 19679963 and sort code 80 22 60.
