Vols OL Jerome Carvin accidentally headbutted helmet-less teammate while hyping him up

First rule when going for a football helmet tap: Make sure the other person is wearing a helmet.

Tennessee senior offensive lineman Jerome Carvin learned that the hard way Saturday night as he was celebrating the Volunteers’ dominant performance and 44-6 win against Kentucky.

Carvin leaned in and gave fellow offensive lineman Gerald Mincey a hyped-up helmet hit during the game, though there was one huge problem.

Mincey wasn’t wearing his helmet.

To his immense credit, Carvin immediately went to check on his teammate to make sure he was okay. Mincey seemed fine after the accidental headbutt, but we’re sure it didn’t feel great.

Ouch is right! Football helmets are harder than you think!

Carvin and Mincey will probably laugh about this in the days ahead, as Tennessee has plenty of reasons to smile after the banner year the football program is having. After all, the Vols improved to 8-0.

Next time, though, we’re sure Vols will all do a helmet check before going in for a celebratory headbutt. You live and learn.
