Voice actor of Disney’s Mulan and singer Coco Lee dies aged 48

The voice actor of Disney’s Mulan and famous Hong Kong-born singer Coco Lee has died aged 48. Her family confirmed in a statement on Wednesday (July 6) that she passed away by suicide.

It was revealed in the statement that the star had been battling with depression for several years. Coco had been rushed to hospital at the weekend, before passing away on Wednesday.

The singer-songwriter was originally a Mandopop singer and went on to become the voice of heroine, Fa Mulan, in the Mandarin version of Disney's classic Mulan. Coco also was the voice behind the film's Mandarin version of title song Reflection.

Her acting talents were recognised again recognised when she featured in the 2000 Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winning movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Coco also sang A Love Before Time for the hit movie.

Coco's sister Nancy Lee took to Instagram to share the heart-breaking news with friends and fans. She said: "With great sadness, we are here break the most devastating news: CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months.

"Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July... 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of CoCo’s singing career, in the past 29 years, she’s won countless international acclaims with top selling songs and has left audience w an astounding impression of her excellent live performances.

"As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honoured to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel."

"Finally, we would like to thank the medical staff again for their dedication to care throughout the whole process. At the same time, we hope that everyone will not only miss CoCo, but also share her bright smile, treat people with sincerity, and convey kindness and love to everyone around us, and continue CoCo’s wish to let everyone around feel her love and happiness."

She ended by saying: "Although CoCo stays in the world for not long a time, her rays of light will last forever!" Fans across the globe quickly took to social media to pay their respects.

MingNa tweeted: "I am shocked to learn that #CocoLee passed. Horrible news. What a huge blow to our #Mulan family. She was a vivacious, beautiful and talented artist. My condolences to her family, friends & fans. RIP."
