Vladimir Coufal undergoes ‘successful’ operation on groin injury as West Ham lose another key defender

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal has undergone a “successful” operation on a groin injury, the club have confirmed.

The Czech missed last weekend’s 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle due to an unspecified issue, with Ryan Fredericks deputising at right-back.

On Thursday, West Ham confirmed Coufal’s operation. A club statement read: “The 29-year-old defender has been troubled by an ongoing problem and, following specialist consultation, underwent an operation in London on Thursday morning.”

Club head of medical Richard Collinge said: “Vladimir’s surgery went exactly as planned and he will begin his rehabilitation at Rush Green immediately.”

It is currently unclear how long Coufal will be out of action. Ben Johnson is set to compete with Fredericks for the right-back spot in Coufal’s absence.

The Hammers tied down their academy product to a new two-year deal this week, after taking up an option in his contract. Johnson replaced Fredericks at half-time of the draw with Newcastle.

West Ham host Wolves on Sunday in a crucial match-up for fourth place in the Premier League.
