Vladimir Coufal makes Premier League table admission amid West Ham relegation battle

Vladimir Coufal has revealed it's been 'horrible' checking the Premier League table with West Ham United sitting precariously above the drop zone.

The Hammers are currently embroiled in a relegation battle with only five wins so far this season and 12 defeats, leaving them in 16th position and only two points off the bottom three.

Saturday's 1-1 draw with London rivals Chelsea ensured the club continued their recent unbeaten run, taking it to three games, but overall it's been a disappointing season for a team looking to finish in a European spot for the third season in a row.

The 30-year-old has appeared in 16 of West Ham's 22 games this season and admitted that while some fans stop and ask him for his autograph, others ask more pressing questions which leads to the defender trying to be nice and give a 'polite' answer.

“It happens and they are fans. They pay to watch us play and sometimes when I meet them on the street, some will ask for an autograph which is OK, but others will ask: 'Why are we playing shit?' I try to be polite and say: 'It's football, everyone wants to win but sometimes it's not possible'.

“We can do everything on the pitch to give them a good result and make them happy. That's our job. We have to deal with fans like that sometimes, it's part of the job.

“We have to climb from the relegation zone. One month ago it was horrible to check the Premier League table. That's why I didn't check it for months because it was horrible seeing West Ham near the relegation zone. Now we are climbing up the table and hopefully we can keep going until the end of the season."

Things look to have turned around for David Moyes' side in recent weeks. A 2-0 win over relegation rivals Everton was followed up with a 1-1 draw against high-flying Newcastle United.

The stalemate against Chelsea could have ended in a win for the east London outfit had Tomas Soucek's goal not been ruled out for offside but Coufal said that ultimately the team were happy with a point.

“We showed great character because Chelsea dominated the first 20 minutes. Then after we turned it around and maybe we could've got more than a point from the game. But it's Chelsea so we have to be happy with a point.

“Against Everton we felt big pressure and you could feel the intention in the dressing room."
