Vittoria Guazzini wins women's Italian national time trial as Elisa Longo Borghini relegated

Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ-Suez).

Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ Suez) was crowned as the women’s Italian national time trial champion after Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) was relegated for her team car travelling too close and so reducing the speed of the airflow around the rider.

Longo Borghini finished 0.95 of a second faster than Guazzini but then race judges talked for 30 minutes before changing the official results. They decided that Longo Borghini should be penalised by 25 seconds for failing to respect the minimum gap between the rider and team car that came into force on January 1, 2023. Reports in Italy said the team car was ordered to drop back but failed to do so.

Longo Borghini was placed second in the updated official results, 24 seconds down on Guazzini, who will now ride the Paris Olympic time trial for Italy.

Elena Pirrone (Roland) was the fastest rider for a long time after setting an early fast time and finished third at 1:02, with Gaia Masetti (AG Insurance-Soudal) fourth at 1:06.

Federica Venturelli won the Under women’s title, ahead of her UAE Development teammates Carlotta Cipressi and Francesca Pellegrini.
