Recently released bodycam footage reveals a Virginia police officer fatally shooting a knife-wielding woman who had attacked him during a wellness check last month. The incident involved 33-year-old Sydney Wilson and crisis intervention officer Peter Liu from the Fairfax County Police.
The footage, made public following public outcry over Wilson's death, captures Officer Liu approaching Wilson's apartment after concerns were raised about her mental health by her doctor. Liu initially knocked on the door, and after Wilson briefly answered, she abruptly shut it, prompting Liu to persistently knock for nearly 10 minutes.
When Wilson suddenly opened the door and attacked Liu with a knife, the officer retreated into a hallway, drew his firearm, and repeatedly ordered Wilson to back up. Despite his commands, Wilson continued to advance towards Liu with the knife raised, forcing Liu to defend himself by firing his gun.
Following the altercation, additional officers arrived at the scene to find Liu injured and Wilson incapacitated. Despite attempts to resuscitate her, Wilson succumbed to her injuries.
During a press conference, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis commended Officer Liu for his actions, describing them as valiant and highlighting his composure under pressure. However, Davis confirmed that Liu has been placed on administrative leave pending both criminal and internal investigations into the incident.
