Virgin Media users report widespread outages

Virgin Media was down for some customers in the UK as of early Tuesday morning (April 4).

Service status website Down Detector said issues began just before 2am on Tuesday, with more than 15,000 outage reports. Data from Down Detector reveals when outage reports exceed a typical baseline.

Twitter users reported that they couldn't use their Virgin accounts to access the internet.

One said: “Another day and same issue. @virginmedia. #virginmedia you keep apologising yet it keeps happening and you have the cheek to raise monthly costs. @Ofcom you start looking into this. #VirginMediaoutage.”

Another said: “Hey ehm, @virginmedia, I thought April fools was on the 1st of this month… not had internet since about midnight, and your status checkers says all is fine… but judging by the fact that #virginmedia is trending, this is not really the truth is it? Can we have an update please?”

“I need to work from home got no Internet no tv or phone connection #virginmedia can’t go in to work as they got virgin media also! not sure whether to laugh or cry as I only get paid for my hours. HELP.”

“Hey @virginmedia, I need you to fix your network so I work to pay to use your network #virginmedia #mindblowing.”

Virgin Media users overseas also reported problems.

One person tweeting from India said: “It’s almost 1pm in India, you’d think #virginmedia would have prodded their scripted Twitter team to say something by now... #broadband”

Virgin Media’s Twitter account has responded to the outages:

“We’re aware of an issue that is affecting broadband services for Virgin Media customers as well as our contact centres,” it said. “Our teams are currently working to identify and fix the problem as quickly as possible and we apologise to those customers affected.”

Why are my apps not working?

The outage may have affected a number of apps, with reports of unrelated apps like the iPhone weather app, Santander’s banking app, and clothes resale app Vinted all being down.

However, it is unclear if these outages are related to the Virgin Media outage, or whether these outages have been caused by a separate issues.
