Fans brave the rain to catch glimpse of Virgil van Dijk in city centre

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk was spotted reading books to children in Liverpool ONE.

There were huge crowds as the Dutch footballer, who plays centre-back for Liverpool FC, sat reading books to young fans outside Byron Burger on Monday, April 10. Pictures taken by an ECHO reader show the footballer sat behind a plastic sheet reading with children.

Fans queued in the rain just to catch a glimpse of the LFC star. Van Dijk was in the city with McDonald's Fun Football, which is providing hundreds of free football sessions to give children from every background, gender and ability, the opportunity to enjoy the game.

McDonalds UK tweeted: "What a day at Liverpool ONE with Virgil van Dijk! Virgil came down to join a few of our Fun Football UK sessions, and tested his multi-tasking skills with a Happy Readers book."

The sessions are for children aged between 5-11 and see a team of fully qualified coaches assist the young players. McDonald's is running its biggest year of Fun Football yet, with sessions running from March until June and August until December.

Past special guests in other locations have included Aaron Ramsdale, Georgia Stanway, Gareth Southgate and Jack Rutter. The sessions also sees children being given free books and footballs.
