Virgil van Dijk's bad-hair day, Watford's cheeky request other moments missed from Liverpool's defeat

Liverpool's 44-game unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a crashing halt as they were beaten comprehensively at Watford on Saturday.

Troy Deeney added to an Ismaila Sarr brace as the Hornets became the first team to best Jurgen Klopp's Reds this season.

It means an 18-game winning run comes to a sudden halt , forcing Liverpool to share that all-time Premier League record with Manchester City.

However, they remain just 12 points from a first league title for 30 years, with 10 games still to play.

But you knew all of that, right?

What you might have missed, though, was a series of interesting subplots that went down at Vicarage Road on Saturday evening.

Bad hair day

Even the usually immaculate Virgil van Dijk struggled in Hertfordshire.

Alongside Dejan Lovren for the first time since December, the otherwise imperious Dutchman endured an off-day, like the rest of his team-mates.

And perhaps the writing was on the wall when early in the second half Van Dijk even struggled to get to grips with himself.

The Reds centre-back spent a couple of minutes, in-play, attempting to tie his up while the game went on around him.

Even in possession, Van Dijk could be seen attempting to fix his hair, much to the delight of the travelling Kop who found the whole incident hilarious. It must be stressed, this was at 0-0.

Van Dijk's efforts to sort his man-bun quickly earned him a song from the Reds fans in attendance.

And to those who have never seen the lesser-sighted hair-down version of Liverpool's No.4, then feast your eyes below.

Ox's classy touch

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain knows a thing or two about suffering a serious injury on the pitch.

The Liverpool midfielder was cut down by a career-threatening injury in a Champions League semi-final against Roma in April 2018 and was left on the shelf for a year as a result.

So he will know exactly what Gerard Deulofeu will have been going through as the Watford winger was taken off on a stretcher in the first half.

The Spaniard landed awkwardly after a tangle with Van Dijk, leaving him needing medical treatment and the early signs didn't look good.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made a beeline for Deulofeu as he was carried off and gave him a pat on the shoulder as a mark of respect, no doubt knowing full well the worry and pain the Hornets man would have been experiencing at the time.

A simple mark of class from the Liverpool star. Hopefully Duelofeu's injury is not as bad as first feared.

Watford's cheeky request

Watford fans, quite rightly, were revelling in their joy as they watched their team beat Liverpool 3-0.

The side who hadn't lost all season were being swept aside, in some style, by their men and the Hornets fans were in the mood to celebrate what they were witnessing.

And then came the song. The cheekiest of requests.

"Can we play every week!?" they jokingly asked.

One suspects, they would win very few other games by a three-goal margin if they did play the Reds every seven days, but for now, the Vicarage Road faithful was lapping it up.

Liverpool fans responded by telling them that they will win the Premier League.

The battle may have been lost, but the war will surely be won.

The jig is up

Jurgen Klopp was quick to pass on his messages of congratulations before exiting stage left at Vicarage Road.

Rather than wait until after the full-time whistle, Klopp ducked into the Watford dugout to shake hands with opposite number Nigel Pearson on a job well done.

Klopp tactfully decided that he would allow Pearson the post-match coverage alone with his backroom staff and opted to congratulate the Watford boss moments before the Sky Sports cameras honed in on an immediate reaction at the full-time whistle.

Both Pearson and his assistant Craig Shakespeare were saluted before the Liverpool boss moved away to allow his opposition all of the spotlight. The Reds boss knew the jig was up for his team.
