Virgil van Dijk misses penalty as another Liverpool star exits World Cup

Virgil van Dijk saw a penalty saved as the Netherlands exited the World Cup following their quarter-final clash with Argentina.

Argentina looked to be heading for the semi-finals after finding themselves two goals ahead with eight minutes remaining in normal time, only for Burnley loanee Wout Weghorst to strike twice late on take the game to extra-time. His second effort arrived in the final minute of the ten minutes of additional time.

Spot-kicks followed after neither side could find a winning goal over 30 minutes of extra time, and Van Dijk was up first for his country. Memories of his finish in the Reds' Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea may have come rushing back as he looked to pick out the same side of the goal, but Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved his shot to give Argentina the upper hand.

Steven Berghuis was next to miss for the Dutch, with Lionel Messi, Leandro Parades, Gonzalo Montiel and Lautaro Martinez all scoring for Argentina. Reported Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez saw his effort go wide of the post, but Martinez converted to ensure Messi and co secured a 4-3 win on penalties.

The shootout ended what had been a dramatic game as tempers flared, with Van Dijk in the thick of the action as a brawl broke out during the opening 90 minutes.
