Virgil van Dijk gives verdict on Alexis Mac Allister and hints at next Liverpool transfers

Virgil van Dijk is hopeful of more "quality additions" at Liverpool this summer following the signing of Alexis Mac Allister.

The World Cup winner moved from Brighton & Hove Albion last week for a fee believed to be around £35m to become the Reds' first signing of a window that officially opened on Wednesday.

Midfield remains the area of focus for Jurgen Klopp and new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, however, and the Reds continue to be linked with a whole host of players ahead of what is expected to be a critically important summer of rebuilding at Anfield.

Van Dijk believes Mac Allister is a fine addition to the squad but the Liverpool defender, who is currently on Netherlands duty for their UEFA Nations League semi-final with Croatia on Wednesday evening, admits the Reds' squad needs bolstering further.

"I think [Mac Allister] is a very good player, obviously we have played against him many times [with Liverpool] and also with Holland against Argentina," Van Dijk said.

"I think he will definitely be a big addition and something that we need, you know, in order to be back where we want to be.

"So it's a good start to the transfer window and hopefully we get a couple of more quality additions. But he is definitely one of the players that can make a difference for us in the next couple of years."

Mac Allister, who was part of the Argentina squad that won their first World Cup since 1986 in Qatar last December, signed a five-year deal with the Reds after inspiring Brighton to Europa League qualification for the first time last season.
