Viral RAF gunner who made Queen laugh could pilot Jamaica’s bobsleigh team at Winter Olympics

The Jamaican four-man bobsleigh team will return to the Winter Olympic Games next month - and they're set to be a led by a man famous for drawing a laugh out of the Queen.

The event in Beijing, which gets underway on February 4, will represent a record for the Caribbean island having secured spots in the four-man, two-man sled and women’s monobob categories.

The notion of the four-man team has been an iconic one ever since the 1988 Games in Calgary with their display later turned into a famous Disney film named 'Cool Runnings'.

And their current quartet have taken the final spot in the 28-sled field for China, with Lance Corporal Shanwayne Stephens expected to pilot the sled alongside Rolando Reid, Ashley Watson and Matthew Wekpe - who have been push athletes in all of his four-man races this season.

Stephens, 29 has already enjoyed global fame, albeit briefly, after an exchange with her majesty during lockdown in 2020.

The monarch hosted a video call with from Windsor Castle with members of the armed forces from across the world, with the RAF gunner leaving her surprised when he revealed the unique training regime he had been following during the pandemic.

Upon learning of what Stephens did for a living, she reacted by saying "Gosh. Sounds a very dangerous job," before asking 'So how do you train?"

He explained how he had recently been pushing a Mini Cooper up and down through the streets of Peterborough, which drew a chuckle from the Queen who initially just answered with "Oh."

After taking in what Stephens had told her, she added "Well I suppose that's one way to train," whilst laughing to herself.

On Twitter, the Team Jamaica account celebrated news of qualification whilst also paying tribute to the 1993 film - which was signified by the quote "It will be fire on ice."

The account wrote: 'Jamaica, we have a bobsled team heading to Beijing!

'It will be fire on ice as #TeamJamaica secured their spot at the 2022 Beijing #WinterOlympics.

'This will be the first time Jamaica has qualified in three Olympic bobsled events. These events are the four-man, two-man and women's monobob.'

The news comes after it was confirmed there will be no general sale of tickets to the public in Beijing due to Covid-19.
