A woman was knocked unconscious after a single punch caused her to fall and strike her head on a kerb.
Dylan Polland, 25, was jailed for nine months at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.
He admitted assaulting his victim in the town's Thornhill Road on July 4 last year.
Fortunately, the woman didn't suffer any serious injury.
An allegation that the assault was life-threatening because she ended up lying on the road in the path of traffic was deleted from the charge.
Defence agent Jackson Bateman said Polland, of Thornhill Road, and the woman were friends and he wished to apologise for his behaviour.
The solicitor stated: "They had an argument and this incident shows the danger of just one punch.
"My client is in custody for another matter and is using the time to deal with his alcohol and drug problems."
