Violent brawl erupts as gang 'tries to steal Deliveroo rider's bike' in Canary Wharf

A mass brawl erupted in broad daylight as a group of young men allegedly tried to steal a Deliveroo rider's bike.

Footage captured around half a dozen boys shoving and punching each other outside high-rise offices in Canary Wharf, East London.

At one point, a man in a grey hoodie and black coat attempts to stand between two of those fighting, but is held up and repeatedly slammed against a wall.

Four couriers wearing Deliveroo backpacks and jackets stand nearby, with one attempting to pick up their black bike and get away from the ongoing brawl.

However, one of the men suddenly grabs his bike, forcing him to clutch hold of it in a desperate attempt to stop it from being stolen.

The rider is eventually able to cycle away after the person in a grey hoodie intervenes, and pushes the man away.

Towards the end of the footage, another man is held back by a member of the group who puts their arms around his neck in an apparent attempt to restrain him.

The exact circumstances of yesterday's brawl remain unclear, and it is not believed to have been reported to police.

The video was shared to Twitter and has accumulated over 111,000 views at the time of writing.

A post on Tuesday said: "Today in Canary wharf a group of youths tried to steal a Deliveroo guy's bike.."

Deliveroo confirmed that it is urgently investigating the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We are extremely concerned by this incident and strongly condemn all forms of violence towards riders.

"There is no place for this, especially when riders are carrying out a vital role in their communities. We are currently investigating this as a matter of urgency.

"The safety and well-being of our riders is an absolute priority."

The incident did not appear to have been reported to the Metropolitan Police, said a spokesperson for the force.

It is not the first time that Deliveroo workers have been targeted by gangs in London.

In July last year, footage emerged of a teenager slashing at a Deliveroo cyclist with a knife following a bike crash.

Ludovic Mihalca, 24, said he was picking up an order when three other cyclists "jumped into the cycle lane from the pavement".

He claimed the teenagers punched him in the face after a row erupted when he collided with one of the bikes.

A video taken shortly afterwards showed the courier kicking one of the teens' bikes, before the youngster took out a blade and lunged towards him.

Ludovic previously told the Mirror that he was left unharmed but shaken up by the incident in Southwark, saying: "It's really disappointing."

At the time of the Southwark incident, the Met said no arrests had been made and enquires were ongoing.
