A violent attack at Bathgate Procession and Community Festival left a man in a serious condition in hospital and the cancellation of a popular event.
Police have issued a description of a man they want to speak to after another local ended up being rushed to hospital. The Courier understands he was stabbed.
The frightening incident as happened as families were enjoying entertainment in the Meadow Park area at around 4pm on Saturday.
The 21-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He was described at the time as serious but stable.
The attack led to the popular massed bands event being scrapped in the evening.
Officers are keen to trace a man in connection with the incident who was seen leaving in the direction of Glasgow Road. He’s described as white, 20-30 years old, with stubble and short dark hair which is shaved at the sides. He was wearing a grey Nike top which had yellow shoulders and arms with a pink tick logo and matching shorts.
Detective Inspector Graham Garvie said: “The area was busy at the time as there was a gala day ongoing and I know people will have witnessed what happened.
“I’m appealing to them, anyone who has information about the incident or anyone who recognises the description of the man we’re keen to trace, to contact us.
“I’d also like to reassure the public that this appears to have been an isolated incident. However, officers are carrying out regular patrols of the area and anyone with concerns should speak to police, call 101 or, in the case of an emergency, 999
Locals said it was important that the attack did not detract from the fantastic job the gala committee had done, with more entertainment than ever for all ages.
The event was very well attended and many said it was one of the best yet.
One Facebook user said: It’s an awful thing that happened. I hope the young man recovers.
£However, that shouldn’t be how the day is measured. I thought last year was fantastic and would be such a tough one to beat, but the committee pulled it out the bag this year and it was an even bigger success.
"We should remember the hard work from the committee of volunteers who go above and beyond for the community and not one incident."
Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 2697 of 3 June, 2023. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
