Historic Linlithgow Palace sign for sale on eBay for £5000

A historic Scottish site sign is for sale on eBay for £5000 ...

The sign was used at the centuries-old site where James V and Mary Queen of Scots were born.

The palace, which originated from a royal manor which existed on the site from the 12th century, was a favoured residence of the Stewart kings from James I onwards.

Building work commissioned by James I, III, IV, V and VI can still be seen.

Although the sign — green and rusting, with gold lettering — is undated, it was likely in place at some point from 1940 until 1970.

The palace was little used after 1603 and came under the management of Historic Environment Scotland who undertook extensive repairs in the 1930s and 40s to ensure it was safe for public visitors.

The sign also features pricing for entry which includes a sixpence.

Following decimalisation, on February 15, 1971, the coin remained in circulation with a value of 2.5 new pence. It was taken out of circulation in 1980.

The listing also states it accepts the best offer.

Referring to Mary's execution in in London, the seller wrote: "The executioner botched the execution to say the least. History must ask why was it botched. It was judicial murder to start with, and the botched execution was to inflict as much pain as possible on Mary Queen of Scots and her followers who were at the judicial murder.

"Who would order such a torture? The person who signed the death warrant, her cousin Elizabeth.

"Queen Mary's Skye Terrier saw the execution and would not eat anything and died shortly after. Mary's mother was Mary of Guise and it is said she haunts Linlithgow Palace. This is pure history and this is an historical item."
