Vincent Kompany returns to the Etihad as Man City draw Burnley in FA Cup quarter-finals

Manchester City will face Vincent Kompany's Burnley in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after the four ties were confirmed in this evening's draw.

City moved into the last-eight of the tournament after Tuesday evening's comfortable 3-0 win at Bristol City. Phil Foden netted a brace against the Championship outfit on a brilliant night for the 22-year-old, with Kevin De Bruyne rifling in a third.

And Pep Guardiola will now have to prepare his side to face Championship leaders Burnley and former captain Kompany in the last-eight, with the fixture to take place at the Etihad on the weekend of March 18 and 19. Burnley defeated Fleetwood 1-0 on Wednesday evening to make it through to the quarter-finals.

RATINGS: Dias and Foden brilliant in win vs Bristol

City have made it to all of the last four semi-finals, but have fallen at that stage in all of the last three campaigns. Guardiola's only success in the tournament came with a thumping 6-0 final win against Watford during the 2018/2019 season.

The Blues boss was already planning how to maximise his side's chances of a trip to Wembley shortly after defeating Bristol.

"This competition is so nice," said Guardiola. "We won once, we arrived at three semi-finals but we didn't perform well.

"I remember those semi finals mainly because they were just three days after away games in the Champions League and we were exhausted. Hopefully this season we can go through, arrive in better conditions to complete the final of the FA Cup because it is a really nice competition."

Progression into the quarter-finals has resulted in the postponement of City's league game against West Ham, originally set for that weekend in March.

Tuesday evening also saw Premier League opposition in Brighton and Fulham progress, beating Stoke City and Leeds United respectively while second-tier Blackburn Rovers beat Leicester City. The shock of the round came on Wednesday when League Two Grimsby beat Premier League Southampton 2-1.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, Championship outfit Sheffield United defeated Tottenham 1-0 while Manchester United struck late goals to beat West Ham 3-1 .
