Vincent Kompany delivers honest verdict on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta amid Man City title battle

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has spoken about Mikel Arteta's development as Arsenal head coach over the last few years.

Kompany captained Manchester City during Arteta's time as an assistant coach at the Etihad Stadium before they both eventually became managers. The Belgian started out at Anderlecht before taking off at Turf Moor last summer.

The Clarets have been flying since, currently sitting first in the Championship, 17 points ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough. Now, the 36-year-old has heaped praise on Arteta's coaching ability, admitting that he hasn't been surprised by the Spaniard's recent success in north London.

"He's got the energy and especially the resilience to deal with setbacks and keep going, draw his own conclusions and improve," said Kompany when asked about the Arsenal boss. "That’s why I think he's doing so well with Arsenal.

"And that is why he is definitely he's going to continue doing well, there's no doubt about that." Kompany also spoke about Arteta's relationship with former mentor Pep Guardiola, who he is currently battling with for the Premier League title.

He added: "The pair had a very natural good relationship and understanding. There was a great compatibility between the two.

"I could draw the link to what he's doing now and that's why I'm not surprised. And like any good coaching staff, he was definitely an extension of Pep, probably the one of the coaching staff that was closer to the players, and understanding fully what Pep wanted as a manager.

"You could see Mikel was in that transition moment from being a player to being a coach. He was hungry, he was very active, full of energy, and obviously he was in a good environment to develop and grow his own ideas."
