Vinai Venkatesham reveals Arsenal's summer transfer plans and delivers January explanation

Arsenal have had a rollercoaster 2021/22 campaign so far, to say the least.

The Gunners endured a torrid start that saw them lose all of their opening three Premier League games before steadying the ship and firmly joining the race to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.

Mikel Arteta's side currently find themselves four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, although the Red Devils have played three more matches than their north Londoners, who garnered considerable criticism from fans for their business in the January transfer window.

Technical director Edu allowed the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Pablo Mari to leave on loan whilst former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and experienced defender Calum Chambers both jumped ship without any replacements joining Arteta and Co.

Now, Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has explained during a fans' forum why the club failed to bolster their squad during the winter window before confirming that additional signings will be made come the end of the season.

Peter Host, who attended the forum summarised what Venkatesham said, tweeting: "We are well in contention for European places.

"We have got a really good chance of getting in the top four, and that’s what we’re fighting for.

"A lot of rebuilding was done in the summer. There are plans to strengthen the club further this coming summer. We have a very clear plan."

He continued: "I’m not a big fan of the January window.

"We were focused on seeing if any of the things we wanted to do this summer could be brought forward. We were active in a number of conversations. In the end, it didn’t prove possible.

"Everybody is comfortable with what we have."

If Venkatesham is to be believed, Arsenal may be set for a busy summer, with Arteta extremely keen to bolster his frontline and football.london understands that the club are monitoring the progress of Chelsea youngster Armando Broja.

Broja is currently on loan with Southampton, where he has enjoyed an extremely productive season, nothing eight goals and two assists across all competitions - hugely impressive numbers when you consider he is still just 20-years-old.

The Gunners may need to sign more than one centre-forward given Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both into the final five months of their respective contracts at the Emirates Stadium.

Real Sociedad's Alexander Isak has also been heavily linked, as well as Lille frontman Jonathan David.
