'Vile' thug locked up for machete rammy in quiet Lanarkshire street

An East Kilbride man armed himself with a machete after unwelcome visitors tried to smash through his front door.

Zeshan Syed was jailed for 22 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted unlawful possession of the blade in the town's Ardochrig on August 8 while on bail for another matter.

Syed, 36, also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour towards police officers after his arrest.

The court heard he tried to barricade himself in his house as two would-be intruders used a piece of wood in a bid to break the door down.

He then emerged with a machete and a chase ensued - the men fled and were not traced.

Syed sustained injuries during the confrontation and police officers took him to hospital.

His lawyer told the court: "The Crown accepts that he reacted after being attacked at his home.

"He has been in custody since his arrest in August.

"He has mental health difficulties that have been exacerbated by his misuse of alcohol.

"However, he is a father and his relationship with his partner and children remains strong."

The solicitor said social workers recommended a community-based sentence as an alternative to more time in custody.

But Sheriff John Speir said only a prison stretch was appropriate, given the serious nature of the machete charge and Syed's record.

The sheriff also slammed his "vile" verbal abuse of the police after his arrest.

The 22-month sentence was backdated to August 9.
