'Vile, sick, abhorrent’ video appearing to mock Michaela McAreavey murder condemned by Taoiseach

A video showing a large group of people appearing to sing a song about the murder of Michaela McAreavey has sparked widespread condemnation and been described as "absolutely sick".

The video, which appears to have been filmed with Orange Order banners in the background, was uploaded to Facebook but has since been taken down.

The PSNI and Orange Order are investigating after the video appeared online and politicians both North and South have condemned it.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he is “appalled” at a video which appears to show people mocking the murder of Michaela McAreavey and said those involved should apologise.

Mr Martin said: “I was appalled and horrified at that video and we all remember that horrific murder of Michaela McAreavey

“It’s beyond comprehension that people could behave in that manner and be so indifferent to the trauma that the family suffered, her entire family and indeed community.

“I think it speaks to a sectarianism and a degree of malice and hate in society that needs to be dealt with and those involved in that should apologise in the first instance.

“The entire community and those involved should reflect very strongly on that. It’s just beyond comprehension.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney tweeted it is "important to see condemnation across the board of the hateful and shameful behaviour.

“Our thoughts and solidarity are with John and Michaela’s family.”

The 27-year-old young woman was murdered while she was on her honeymoon at the Legends Hotel in Mauritius on January 10, 2011.

The teacher, who had married husband John ten days earlier, was attacked after she returned to her room alone and disturbed a burglary.

She is the daughter of Mickey Harte, the multiple All-Ireland Senior Football Championship-winning Gaelic football manager.

No one has been convicted of her murder.

The video which has been shared across social media references the woman going to “Mauritius on her honeymoon”.

Those singing go on to mock her death in the hotel room on her honeymoon and reference the woman’s father.

The video shows a group of men in a room of dozens of people, drinking, laughing, and chanting.

While it has not yet been verified where the scenes in the video took place, it is understood it occurred during the Centenary celebrations, with Orange Order banners in the background and Union flag bunting.

Politicians in the north have also condemned the video. SDLP leader Colum Eastwood described it as "absolutely sick", while party councillor Malachy Quinn said it was "beyond reprehensible", Belfast Live reports.

DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson described the video as "vile".

"It is plain wrong and is deeply hurtful to the family of Michaela McAreavey," he tweeted.

UUP leader Doug Beattie tweeted that it was "absolutely abhorrent, disgusting and shameful", while deputy leader Robbie Butler said he could "only imagine what it does to her poor family".

Sinn Fein's Mid Ulster MLA Linda Dillon said she would not be re-sharing the video on social media but added her condemnation.

"I have one beautiful wee girl and if that was my daughter my heart would be broken," she said.

"My deepest thoughts are with the family. I am forever grateful my child is not capable of that kind of hatred."

In a statement, a spokesman for the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland said: "The video currently circulating on social media relating to the murder of Michaela McAreavey is utterly abhorrent and the Orange Institution condemns the content without reservation.

"The behaviour of those involved and their actions have no place in our society and certainly do not reflect the ethos of our organisation.

"The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has instigated an inquiry into the incident and if any of those involved are found to be members of the Institution, they will face disciplinary proceedings."

The PSNI said it is aware of the video posted online and is "examining the content to determine if any offences may have been committed."
