At the last OTA practice before mandatory minicamp, the Minnesota Vikings were seen trying some things out. According to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, third-round pick Mekhi Blackmon spent a lot of time with the starting groups working in the slot.
Having Blackmon play in the slot is a fascinating idea. During his college career, he only played 261 snaps in the slot with just three of them coming last season at USC.
His skill set does track with someone who can be successful in the slot. He is physical with the athleticism and fluidity to stay in phase with wide receivers on a split release.
Does this mean that Blackmon has the inside track in the slot or that’s where the Vikings see his best fit? Not necessarily. It could just be seeing how things go with the personnel they have. His size might make him a better fit on the inside because he is slight.
