Vikings 2024 NFL draft scouting report: Tulane QB Michael Pratt

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.

The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Background

Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

Michael Pratt

  • Tulane
  • Height-6030
  • Weight-220 lbs
  • Fourth-year senior
  • 3-Star recruit per 247 Sports
  • Stats: 730-of-1,209 (60.4%), 9,586 yards, 90 touchdowns, 26 interceptions, 233 carries, 1,701 yards, 28 touchdowns
  • Games watched: South Alabama 2023, Memphis 2023, SMU 2023

Strengths

Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

Pratt is mechanically sound. He is consistent with his drop-back and his footwork and his release is crisp.

Has a fair amount of zip on the ball when playing in rhythm. Sees the field well and has no issue driving the ball into tight windows.

Shows good ball placement to all levels of the field. Can throw with good placement while on the move or with his base underneath him.

Pratt is plenty comfortable on the move. He is trying to throw the football initially before taking off which is also a plus. Pratt has good burst from the pocket and can eat up chunks of yards in the open field.

Weaknesses

Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

Pratt has enough zip on the ball but doesn’t have the strongest arm. It won’t be a difference-maker. Can lose steam when throwing to the opposite hash.

Can get stuck on a read too often, causing defenders to jump the route. Also doesn’t keep the ball out of harms way enough. 14 turnover-worthy plays this past season with only 19 big-time throws.

Takes too many sacks. Pratt took a sack on 21.0% of his pressures in 2023 and 23.7% over the course of his college career.

Overview

Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports
Arm Strength 7.7/10
Accuracy 8.0/10
Mechanics 8.5/10
Ball Placement 8.4/10
Throwing Motion 8.4/10
Progressions 7.7/10
Decision Making 7.8/10
Functional Mobility 8.8/10
Durability 7.8/10
Poise 8.1/10
Grade 81.2/100 Second Round

Pratt is a talented player but lacks the higher-end tools that are needed to be a first round quarterback. He did a really good job elevating the talent around him at Tulane and can attack the defense in multiple ways, but not being able to drive the ball outside the numbers will limit him at the next level.
