Vikings 2024 NFL draft scouting report: Tennessee QB Joe Milton

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.

The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Strengths

USA Today Sports

The one trait that Milton has over everyone is his incredible strong arm. He doesn’t just throw it far but can throw it farther than possibly any quarterback in history at 90 yards.

Milton possesses the proper size and athleticism to thrive in the modern NFL. He can see over the line with ease and can maneuver around pressure.

Weaknesses

USA Today Sports

The biggest issue with Milton is his inconsistency. He will go through stretches where he looks like a top pick but will crash back down to earth and barely look draftable.

Accuracy is a big issue for Milton. He can attack all levels of the field but struggles with both accuracy and precision. Most of that can be traced back to inconsistent mechanics, as he gets too wide in his base and doesn’t have his upper and lower halves synced up.

Despite having a true fastball, Milton lacks a changeup. He doesn’t do a good job of layering the ball with touch.

Milton is already 24 and has lost starting jobs at both Michigan and Tennessee due to his inconsistent play. With a pattern having already formed, how can we expect that to change at the next level?

The idea of Milton is one that coaches can get behind. Incredible arm strength that we may never see again is pretty incredible. Unfortunately, the rest of the package just isn’t up to par for a developmental quarterback, especially considering his age. Milton is a driving range quarterback and could be a starter in the new UFL.
