Vikings 2024 NFL draft scouting report: LSU DT Mekhi Wingo

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.

The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Strengths

Julio Aguilar/Getty Images

Wingo wore 18 for LSU which is an honorary number since Jacob Hester wore it in 2007.

Didn’t commit a single penalty the last two seasons. Plays incredibly under control with consistency.

Has an explosive first step that was on full display at the NFL Scouting Combine where his speed splits were all above the 95th percentile.

Flashes the ability to use multiple moves in pass rush Uses good hand placement to gain leverage on blockers and can hold the point of attack against single and double teams.

Weaknesses

Ed Zurga/Getty Images

Despite the ability to flash multiple pass rush moves, his plan isn’t there right now. The overall arsenal is limited as is the pass rush plan.

Counters aren’t consistent in both utilization and effectiveness. Gets stood up too often on the pass rush and is lost on what to do next.

While he holds the point of attack on double teams, he doesn’t have the requisite strength or technique to beat them. In the same vein, can get washed out due to a lack of anchor.

Overview

Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images
Quickness/Penetration 16.5/20
Power 7.8/10
Pass Rush Moves 7.4/10
Counters 6.9/10
Leverage 7.4/10
Tackling 7.5/10
Size/Length 7.0/10
Run Defense 7.5/10
Awareness 7.6/10
Grade 75.6/100 Third Round

Wingo has tools to be a talented player on the interior, especially with leverage. However, there is a lot of development that needs to happen for him to get there. He would be worth a selection late day two, early day three.
