This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.
The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.
The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Strengths
Newton is a freaky athlete. Comes off of the ball with explosive intent and can maneuver around blockers. Uses his quickness to get consistent penetration in both the running and passing games.
Rushing the passer is arguably his best trait. Newton has incredible bend around the edge and can attack from multiple spots. Does a great job preventing offensive linemen from getting engaged by using his active hands. Uses multiple pass rush moves to get to the quarterback.
Newton understands how to use leverage to his advantage. Stays patient in waiting for lineman to lunge and he uses that to his advantage. He also has the strength to move lineman out of his way by getting low.
Has versatility to play across the line which is valuable in a 3-4 or hybrid scheme.
Weaknesses
Struggles a bit with length. When he deals with a lineman with long arms, they can neutralize him somewhat easily.
Looks a little smaller than the 6020 and 295 lbs that he is listed at. It shows on reps then the offensive lineman engages with length. His size becomes a factor when taking on double teams. Unless he has a leverage advantage before the double team hits, Newton gets washed out.
Despite the effort and motor always being there, Newton doesn’t have a great first step. He uses his powerful hands and natural leverage to get penetration.

Newton projects to be a classic 3-technique in a 4-3 defense but could also be a 4i/5-technique in a 3-4 or hybrid defense. His quickness and leverage make him a force to be reckoned with on the interior.
