Vikings 2023 NFL draft scouting report: Michigan State WR Jayden Reed

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2023 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at wide receiver, running back, cornerback and both interior and edge pass rusher.

The Vikings are slated to have five picks in the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Strengths

Syndication Lansing State Journal

The first thing that stands out about Reed is his varied release package. He understands how to get separation at the line of scrimmage. His best examples of that are on fade routes. His quick feet get the defensive back flat-footed and he takes the corner easily.

Everything about this route from Reed is great. He runs a slot fade, but the quarterback throws a poor ball. Reed adjusts well and tracks the ball perfectly with really good body control.

Reed has savvy over the middle of the field. He understands coverage and where to find the open hole in the zone. The best way to describe Reed is that he can do a little bit of everything.

Weaknesses

Dale Young-USA TODAY Sports

Despite being able to do a little bit of everything, Reed isn’t really great at anything. He lacks the size and explosiveness to be a great receiver on the outside. Reed fails to separate in the open field and wins with quickness and not speed.

Reed doesn’t appear to be a natural hands catcher. He doesn’t extend to catch the football, which limits his catch radius. Reed has 19 drops in his career and body catches too often for my liking.

Blocking is not a strong suit. He lacks the grip strength to maintain blocks and doesn’t have the greatest form.

Overview

Hands 7.5/10
Release 7.9/10
Route Running 11.5/15
Separation 12.0/15
Contested Catches 7.0/10

Body Control 7.2/10
YAC Ability 7.2/10

Grade 74.9/100 Fourth Round

Reed is a fine receiver, but his lack of ability to do anything at a really high level presents a struggle for me. I wouldn’t take Reed until the late fourth/fifth round.
