Viewers slam Netflix for streaming Titanic movie days after OceanGate submarine implosion

Netflix has landed in hot water with viewers over making the 1997 blockbuster Titanic available to stream on the platform, just days after the tragic OceanGate Titan vessel implosion. The hit film, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, is set to return to Netflix on July 1 - just days after five people died on the submersible while attempting to visit the famous shipwreck.

The move has been deemed "ruthless" by some Twitter users. On June 18, the submersible suffered a “catastrophic implosion” on its tenth visit to the site of the Titanic - 12,500 ft below sea level.

All five passengers are presumed to have died in the incident - including OceanGate CEO and founder Stockton Rush. Others included British businessman Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood.

In a news conference on Thursday, Rear Admiral John Mauger, who led the search for the missing vessel, confirmed a remotely operated vehicle had found the nose cone of the lost submersible around 1,600ft from the bow of the Titanic on the seafloor.

He added: "On behalf of US Coast Guard and entire unified command, I offer deepest condolences to the families. I can only imagine what this has been like for them, and I hope this discovery provides some solace during this difficult time."

Following news of the disaster, it has been confirmed that Netflix will be bringing back the James Cameron directed movie, along with several other TV shows and films, from the start of next month. However, the move has been blasted by viewers on social media.

MarleyyBoyy tweeted: "Netflix saw the opportunity and wasted no time lol." ShellyKaynyc added: "Seriously inappropriate imo."

Stclairashley declared: "Just cancelled my Netflix over this." Lilverrby said: "Netfix is ruthless for this lmao." McDubs typed: "Letting the movie return when the submarine didn’t is criminal."

Netflix has been approached for comment.
