Vietnam Commemorates 70Th Anniversary Of Dien Bien Phu Battle

A celebration to mark 75th anniversary of Korea Armed Forces Day

On May 7, 2024, Vietnam celebrated the 70th anniversary of the historic Battle of Dien Bien Phu, a significant event that marked the end of almost a century of French colonial rule in Indochina. The battle, which took place in 1954, saw Vietnamese troops, led by General Vo Nguyen Giap, achieve a decisive victory over the French colonial army.

The commemoration ceremony was held in Dien Bien Phu, a city that has transformed from a village with a wartime past to a bustling urban center with a population of over 80,000 people. Thousands of locals and war veterans, many in their 90s, gathered at a stadium in the city center to honor the legacy of the battle.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted the significance of the Dien Bien Phu victory, not only for Vietnam but also as an inspiration for nations fighting for independence and freedom worldwide. The ceremony included a military parade, with participants waving Vietnamese flags amid a tropical shower.

French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu made history by becoming the highest-ranking French official to visit the former battlefield and attend the commemorations in Dien Bien Phu. Lecornu's presence symbolized the evolving relationship between Vietnam and France, once wartime enemies who now strive for peace and cooperation.

During his visit, Lecornu paid respects to the wartime relics, including the preserved bunker of Commander General Christian de Castries, where the French forces surrendered after a fierce battle lasting nearly two months. War veterans like Nguyen Trung Dung and Pham Duc Cu expressed sentiments of reconciliation and unity, emphasizing the importance of building a world free from conflict.

The commemoration of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence and the enduring quest for peace in the region. As Vietnam and France come together to honor the past and look towards a shared future, the legacy of Dien Bien Phu continues to resonate as a symbol of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom.
