Video shows moment hundreds of Edinburgh locals line streets for supercar rally

Hundreds lined the streets of Edinburgh over the weekend as the Gumball 3000 rally kicked off from the capital.

The event, which is in its 24th year, sees a hundred drivers embark on a 3000 mile trip through Europe wrapping up in Porto Montenegro. On June 10, Edinburgh Castle played host to the official exclusive welcome party for Gumballers and VIPs, with entrants raising money for charity with the chance to start the rally from pole position.

Sunday saw the start flag waved from George Street, as the one hundred cars then made their way through the city and onwards to London to begin their first leg.

The name comes from the 1976 movie The Gumball Rally. It was established in 1999 by Maximillion Cooper, with his vision to combine cars, music, fashion and entertainment.

Scenes from the start line were flooding social media, with enthusiasts posting their content. Mat Armstrong, a YouTuber who builds and modifies cars, was seen at the starting line by fans.

Posting an update to followers, the Gumball 3000 rally said: "Mat Armstrong is here for Gumball. See you in London later today."

Fans were quick to show support, with one commenting: "To think that car wasn't moving a few months ago and now he's getting it to do 3,000 miles."

Another added: "Amazing work what he's done to that car."

A third said: "Amazing work. Hope he gets it to the finish line, love his YouTube channel."
