Video showing mass GAA brawl involving All-Ireland senior champions goes viral

Down GAA are set to investigate ugly scenes which marred their Division One League final on Wednesday night.

St Mary's, Burren beat defending All-Ireland club champions Kilcoo 1-12 to 0-7 at Mayobridge.

Tempers spilled over 10 minutes from time when a series of brawls broke out involving players from both teams.

When the dust finally settled, referee Conor Curran issued red cards to six players - three from each team. Footage of the incident has been widely shared on social media in the days since.

Burren's Odhran Murdock, Danny Magill and Ryan Magill were dismissed along with Kilcoo trio Jerome and Ryan Johnston and Sean Og McCusker.

Down officials will await the findings of Curran's referee's report before deciding if further disciplinary action will be taken while footage of the game from Down TV may also be made available to the CCC.

A red card would usually rule all six out of their respective team's opening league fixture of the 2023 campaign.

However, a more serious infraction and a greater suspension could lead to some players being suspended for the forthcoming club Championship.

Kilcoo begin the defence of their Down, Ulster and All-Ireland titles next Friday night with a blockbuster clash against Clonduff in Pairc Elser Newry (7pm).

Burren also face a tough opening tie as they face Mayobridge on Monday, August 29 (7.30pm) in Newry.
