The NRL integrity unit is investigating after video of Kalyn Ponga being ushered out of a toilet cubicle by a security guard emerged on Monday.
The brief clip, captioned "Ponga getting done in the toilet", shows a security guard ushering Ponga and Newcastle Knights teammate Kurt Mann out of a bathroom stall, saying "oh, that's a surprise" when he sees Ponga.
Football director Peter Parr said the team had spoken to the players, but those conversations were confidential, with the league's integrity unit now in charge of the process.
"We haven't discussed any punishment yet because we don't know if there's any punishment to be had," Parr said at a press conference.
Ponga's father told News Corp on Monday that Mann was simply helping his teammate, who had been "sick in the toilet".
"[Ponga] made an exciting house purchase Saturday and celebrated with a few mates drinking," he said.
"His mate went in to help him."
Ponga is currently sidelined due to concussion, with the club taking a cautious approach after repeated head knocks.
Parr said he understood Ponga was not under medical advice to avoid alcohol, adding he did not know how much Ponga drank.
"Right at the moment we're not making any decisions. We're open-minded about it," he said.
"It's not a great look, but all the facts haven't been established yet. Just because it's not a good look doesn't straight away mean that someone's done anything wrong."
Parr said the club would cooperate fully with the integrity unit investigation.
The Knights re-signed Ponga on a lucrative five-season deal earlier this year, staving off a bid from incoming franchise the Dolphins.
While not speculating on Ponga's future as captain, Parr said the team was lacking leadership and discipline, as evidenced by two other players being late for the team bus on Sunday morning after their game against Brisbane the previous night.
Bradman Best and Enari Tuala have been stood down from NRL duties and will play NSW Cup this weekend.
