Residents fed-up of living on a pothole plagued road are celebrating a victory.
Council workers were sent to the crater-strewn U63a Springfield to Gilmourpark route near Lochmaben on Tuesday after locals appeared in the Standard with their specially made warning sign telling drivers to “remove false teeth, tighten bra straps and apply a Tena pad” if they drove on the road.
They took matters into their own hands after two years of constant complaints to the council.
But they are delighted work is finally under way to repair the road.
Bryan Woods, who came up with the idea of the sign, is thrilled.
Mr Woods, 72, said: “Workers were out the day the story appeared in the Standard and already a third of it has been repaired.
“It’s absolutely brilliant and the guys are making a great job of it.
“It looks like the sign has done the trick.”
Since the Standard reported the story, Mr Woods has been contacted by people from “all over Britain” asking if they can borrow the sign, which he has now taken down.
He said: “I’ve taken it down but I’ve had non-stop phone calls from so many people asking if they can borrow it or buy it.
“The sign seems to have gone viral.
“It seems to have given other communities similar ideas.
“We’re fair chuffed the work is being done and we’re very grateful for it.”
