Victoria Police officer charged with recklessly causing injury in Flinders Street Station arrest

The arrest in September last year was filmed and uploaded to social media.

A Victorian police officer has been charged over an arrest captured on film where he appeared to grab a man from behind and swing him forcefully into the ground.

The senior constable involved in the arrest at Melbourne's Flinders Street Station on September 22 last year was stood down from his position soon afterwards.

The 36-year-old officer has been charged with recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault and common law assault after an investigation by Victoria Police.

A video of the event was filmed and posted to social media, where it was widely circulated.

The footage shows two police officers speaking to a man before a third officer appears to grab the man and bring him down to the tiled floor.

The alleged assault took place while the city was in lockdown, during a period when large anti-lockdown and anti-vaccination protests were taking place in central Melbourne.

The Victoria Police investigation was overseen by the state's anti-corruption watchdog, Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).
