Victoria elects UAP candidate Ralph Babet to Senate seat

Victoria has delivered Clive Palmer's United Australia Party its only seat in federal parliament, after UAP candidate Ralph Babet snared the final Victorian Senate seat almost a month after the election.

The Australian Electoral Commission this morning confirmed the final results for the six Senate vacancies in Victoria, after the distribution of preferences.

Mr Babet claimed the final spot ahead of candidates for the Legalise Cannabis Australia party and Pauline Hanson's One Nation.

The result also means Liberal candidate Greg Mirabella — husband of former federal minister Sophie Mirabella — misses out on a Senate seat.

The six elected senators for Victoria have now been confirmed as the Liberal Party's Sarah Henderson, Linda White and Jana Stewart from Labor, the Nationals' Bridget McKenzie, Lidia Thorpe from the Greens, and Mr Babet.

In his candidate profile on the UAP's website, Mr Babet, who works in the real estate sector, is described as "passionate about freedom, individual liberty and advocates for a strong Australia."

"He will not stand by while those in power ignore the pleas of the people. The people have demanded an end to segregation, an end to mandates and an end to the ever growing power and authoritarianism of the Government," the profile reads.

UAP failed to win a Senate seat in any other state, and also failed to win a seat in the House of Representatives, despite Mr Palmer spending tens of millions of dollars on campaign advertising.

The party gathered just over 4 per cent of the vote nationwide, with a swing of 0.69 per cent.

In a statement, Clive Palmer congratulated Mr Babet on his election to federal parliament's upper house.

"As a former business owner, Ralph understands at the grass-roots level what is required for economic prosperity in this country," Mr Palmer said.

"He will take the fight to the mainstream parties to deliver a better economic future for all Australian families."

The Queensland businessman also made claims of electoral fraud, but did not give any specific examples.

"There are concerning elements regarding actions of the AEC which we will be bringing to light by presenting evidence," Mr Palmer said.

The UAP said it would field candidates in all seats at the upcoming Victorian state election in November.

The party's highest profile candidate, former Liberal MP Craig Kelly, failed to win in the NSW seat of Hughes, gathering just over 7,000 first preference votes.

Mr Kelly had held the seat for the Liberal party since 2010, but defected to the UAP in 2021.

In Victoria, just over 147,000 people cast Senate votes for the UAP, while Mr Babet attracted 4,425 below-the-line votes.
