More than 8000 COVID reinfections in Vic

More than 8000 COVID-19 reinfections have been recorded in Victoria since the start of the pandemic.

The state's health department has tracked reinfections through a comprehensive data matching-process during the past two years, and told AAP there had been 8161 known reinfections.

The first suspected case of reinfection in Australia was reported in Victoria in October 2020.

The state had 9594 new COVID-19 cases and seven deaths on Tuesday.

There are 256 people in hospital, while 24 patients are in intensive care and five are on ventilation.

It's the state's highest number of daily COVID-19 cases since February 9 but the Victorian government is still urging people to go out and travel.

Another 140,000 travel vouchers will be available to the public from 2pm on Wednesday.

The scheme provides applicants with a $200 reimbursement if they spend more than $400 on accommodation or attractions.

The travel period will be between April 8 and May 27 and vouchers will be limited to one per household.

The Victorian government will also distribute another 60,000 air purifiers to state and low-fee non-government schools.

Education Minister James Merlino said the rollout would ensure students and teaching staff were protected.

About 51,000 air purifiers have been sent to schools since the start of term one.

Samsung was awarded the contract for the extra air purifiers following an open tender process.
