Victor Wembanyama, the rising star of the San Antonio Spurs, is facing a setback as he is likely to miss the team's upcoming games due to a right ankle sprain. Head coach Gregg Popovich confirmed this news on Thursday night, revealing that Wembanyama will be sidelined for the remainder of the road trip.
The Spurs, currently in Sacramento for a game against the Kings, will also face the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco on Saturday night. Wembanyama, who is dealing with the injury, did not travel with the team to Sacramento after their game in Houston.
Popovich mentioned that Wembanyama is expected to miss the next two games but is hopeful for his return on Monday when the Spurs host the Warriors in San Antonio. The young player was initially listed as questionable for the game against the Rockets due to left shoulder soreness but was cleared to play. Unfortunately, he suffered a right ankle tweak during the game and was visibly struggling with his right hip as well.
Despite attempting to continue playing after getting re-taped during the game, Wembanyama's performance was affected, especially in the second half where he did not take any shots and appeared limited defensively. Popovich acknowledged that they only realized the extent of his discomfort after reviewing the game footage.
Thursday's absence marks only the seventh game Wembanyama has missed this season. If he sits out the upcoming game against the Warriors, it will be the first time this season that he misses consecutive games, highlighting the significance of his injury and the team's reliance on his contributions.
