Victor Osimhen Arsenal links spark striker discussion amid Gabriel Jesus’ long-awaited return

Arsenal signed one of the most transformative figures last summer with the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. The Brazilian has brought a level and style of performance to the striker role that has seen the Gunners elevate their best features and even in his absence have continued to show their level highlighting the wider effects of his introduction to the team.

Despite his arrival, this has not stopped suggestions that Arsenal could move for another striker. The Athletic's David Ornstein initially suggested that this could indeed be on the agenda for the summer alongside a number of other positions.

Speaking on NBC Sports, he said: “Edu as the technical director has a very clear vision of where he wants to take Arsenal, how he goes about it, and it seems to be a pretty popular figure within the club and outside. Also, the Kroenkes, who own Arsenal, they’ve had so much stick over the years but they appear to be moving Arsenal in the right direction, and they will also have targets for the summer: a holding midfielder, maybe strength in depth at fullback, maybe even a centre forward.”

Folarin Balogun is due to return to the club in the summer after a very successful spell away with Reims in Ligue 1. He’ll join up with Jesus and Eddie Nketiah making the position rather crowded which, should a centre-forward be on the agenda as Ornstein suggests, could mean one of the three is destined to depart in the window.

One name linked with Arsenal in the past with suggestions the Gunners are indeed leading the race for the striker this summer is Victor Osimhen. He spoke to the press after the 1-0 defeat to Lazio last week and admitted his desire to one day move to the Premier League.

"A lot of people worldwide consider the Premier League as the best and the strongest league but now I'm in one of the best leagues in the world which is the Italian Serie A. I'm working so hard to make sure that I achieve my dream of playing in the Premier League someday but like I said, it's a process and I just want to keep on this momentum and continue to do well."

Napoli being the shrewd negotiators they are will not be letting their key asset leave cheaply. The 24-year-old’s deal doesn’t expire until 2025 and the Serie A league leaders spent a huge amount of money securing Osimhen from Lille in the first place.

With needs in the midfield, wide and full-back areas do Arsenal have the scope to invest in a player like Osimhen when they already have several viable options in the position? Arguably not.
