Victim of vicious Dublin assault in 'critical' condition after undergoing surgery

A man who was viciously attacked on a street in the capital has undergone surgery in hospital.

Gardai have launched a probe into the attack which happened in the early hours of this morning between 4am and 5am at a laneway near Parnell Street, Dublin.

Investigators believe a number of people were involved in the attack on the man, who is aged in his 20s.

After the alarm was raised, the man was initially brought to the Mater Hospital before he was transferred to Beaumont Hospital.

And he has undergone surgery there for his serious injuries today.

A garda spokesman said that the victim's condition is described as "critical."

Officers from Mountjoy Garda Station are leading the investigation.

As part of the probe, CCTV will be examined in a bid to identify the attackers.

The spokesman added: "The scene where the incident happened is currently preserved for technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

"Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact them.

"Gardai can be contacted at Mountjoy Garda Station 01 666 8600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."
