Makeshift opener Matt Short crunched a quickfire half-century to lift Victoria to a competitive total in their rain-shortened One-Day Cup match against Western Australia in Melbourne.

Victoria posted 6-244 in their allotted 36 overs after the first two hours of play at Junction Oval were lost due to rain.

Promoted to the top of the order, middle-order batter Short was a bright light for the Vics with 75 off just 59 balls, including two sixes.

There were plenty of starts for the Victorian batters but none were able to feature in a long partnership.

Test opener Marcus Harris slotted in at No.3 and posted 24, while Mackenzie Harvey made 28 at the top of the order.

Andrew Tye (3-55) was the chief wicket-taker for a WA bowling attack that had first use of the ball after winning the toss.

Tye notably dismissed in-form Peter Handscomb with a smart caught and bowled after the Victoria skipper had contributed 30 from 26 deliveries.

Jonathan Merlo provided a later flourish for the home side with an unbeaten 28 in a 17-ball cameo that included three towering sixes.
