Vicky Phelan has shared her latest update as she revealed to her followers that her condition was ‘stable enough’ for her to be able to go on a family holiday in Spain.
The CervicalCheck campaigner jetted off on the well-deserved break with her two children, Amelia and Darragh and her former partner Jim.
After the recent delays in Dublin Airport, Vicky opted to fly out of Shannon Airport, bypassing the hustle and bustle of Dublin and thanked those who helped her along her journey, as she required wheelchair assistance en route.
Posting to Instagram, the author wrote: "Just back home since yesterday evening from a much-needed, wonderful week away in Spain with Jim and the kids."
"I got the go ahead a couple of weeks ago from my medical team that my disease was stable enough for me to go away on holidays and I jumped at the opportunity."
Vicky and Jim, who separated in 2017 but live together with their children as a family unit, opted to go through a travel agent for the trip.
"I got in touch with my travel agent @jean.cusack at @icontravelwaterford who did an amazing job putting together our epic three week holiday to New Zealand just before Covid-19 came into our lives, to see about putting together a package that would suit my current circumstances," she wrote.
"I had Cambrils on the Costa Daurada, in my head as a possibility for a number of reasons -
1 - We would be able to fly there from Shannon and not Dublin. Shannon is a 30 minute drive from my house. A no-brainer!
2 - A number of my good friends have been going to Cambrils for years and keep going back so I grilled them on why and discovered that, between the kilometres of beautiful, sandy beaches and the choice of theme parks like Port Aventura, Ferrari Land and a water park called Aquopolis, there is sooooo much to do for kids and all within a 15/20 minute drive of Cambrils.”
The mum-of-two spent her time relaxing in the quiet, private villa as the setting for the trip that was close to the beach but also had its own pool.
"We decided to go for a private villa with a pool rather than book in somewhere like Cambrils Park, a dedicated holiday park with multiple pools and restaurants and activities on site. I wanted a bit more privacy and some peace and quiet and Jean came up trumps with the villa that she found for us which had a really decent sized pool AND was literally two minutes walk from the beach and the promenade which could take us all the way into Cambrils and even as far as the much busier town of Salou," she said.
"I feel refreshed after a week away, some heat in my bones and a change of scenery. We hope to get away again towards the end of the summer if my body cooperates but I would highly recommend Cambrils for families."
"I would also recommend flying out of @shannon_airport A special note of thanks to Isabel Harrison."
"The staff at Shannon could NOT have done more for us. I needed wheelchair assistance going through the airports and it all went seamlessly. We were in the airport, through security and relaxing in the lounge within 20 minutes of arriving."
Vicky has been sharing a number of updates on how she is feeling via social media in recent months, which comes after she took a break from her online presence last year after being "too sick" to film a video.
In a statement in November 2021, Vicky said that she would not be continuing with chemotherapy, and the treatment she is now receiving is just palliative.
