Vicki Newton faces Darwin court over alleged kidnapping of five-year-old grandson

A woman charged over the alleged kidnapping of her five-year-old grandson in Darwin last week has been released on bail.

Vicki Newton, 56, was charged alongside the boy's stepfather Wayne Cranfield, 37, for allegedly abducting the boy from a street in Nakara last Friday afternoon.

The pair were arrested and remanded in custody after each being charged with abducting a child under 16 and recklessly endangering serious harm.

They both faced the Darwin Local Court on Monday.

Police said last week that the boy's mother tried to prevent the alleged abduction while he was being placed in a car, causing her to fall to the road.

She was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Ms Newton's lawyer, Josh Bach, told the court his client had no criminal history and that she should be granted bail while "all the necessary material" regarding the case was gathered.

"It seems to me that this matter would take some time to resolve — any time would be spent on remand, which would be a significant disadvantage to her," he said.

Mr Bach also said there was a "substantial diversion" between his client's version of events and her grandson's mother's.

Ms Newton was granted bail on the condition that she return to her home state of South Australia within seven days and not make contact with the child or his mother.

She will return to court on March 29.

Mr Cranfield also applied for bail, with his lawyer Nicola MaCarron telling the court her client had a "limited" criminal history in South Australia.

The bail application was adjourned to Thursday while the court waits for a bail assessment.
