Vice President Kamala Harris is set to deliver a eulogy for U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee at a North Houston church on Thursday, marking the culmination of days of memorials for the esteemed Democratic lawmaker. Jackson Lee, who represented her Texas district for nearly three decades, was a trailblazer in Congress, particularly as one of the most prominent Black women in the political arena.

Known for her advocacy on various social justice issues, Jackson Lee played a pivotal role in federal initiatives to combat domestic violence and secure national recognition for Juneteenth as a holiday. Her passing at the age of 74 on July 19, following a battle with pancreatic cancer, was met with an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and leaders across the nation.

The commemoration of Jackson Lee's life commenced on Monday with a public viewing at Houston's City Hall, where hundreds paid their respects. President Joe Biden was among those who honored her memory, laying flowers by her casket and offering condolences to her family.

Subsequent viewings at two different churches on Tuesday and Wednesday provided further opportunities for the community to reflect on Jackson Lee's impactful legacy. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she served on Houston's city council and later emerged as a steadfast advocate for marginalized communities and women's rights.

Notably, she spearheaded the revision of the Violence Against Women Act, incorporating crucial protections for vulnerable groups such as Native American, transgender, and immigrant women.

Despite facing health challenges, including a previous battle with breast cancer, Jackson Lee remained a resilient force in politics, consistently securing reelection to Congress. Her bid for Houston's mayoral office in the previous year reflected her enduring commitment to public service and community welfare.

The upcoming eulogy by Vice President Harris underscores the profound impact of Jackson Lee's contributions to American politics and social justice, highlighting her enduring legacy as a pioneering figure in the fight for equality and progress.
